From MTV to the Priesthood: Father Dave Dwyer’s Unexpected Calling

From MTV to the Priesthood: Father Dave Dwyer’s Unexpected Calling

What if the career you spent years building was actually preparing you for a completely different calling?

That’s the central question at the heart of our latest episode of No Wrong Choices featuring Father Dave Dwyer — Paulist priest, Executive Director of Busted Halo Ministries, and host of The Busted Halo Show on SiriusXM’s Catholic Channel.

Before becoming one of the most recognizable voices in faith-based media, Father Dave was building a successful career in television production. He worked behind the scenes at MTV and Comedy Central during the rise of modern cable television, directing live broadcasts and working alongside talents like Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, Ray Romano, and many others.

But despite professional success and exciting opportunities in media, Father Dave began to feel pulled toward something he had never seriously considered before: the priesthood.

The Moment That Changed Everything

During our conversation, Father Dave reflects on a pivotal experience in Denver in 1993, where hearing Pope John Paul II speak at World Youth Day forced him to reconsider what fulfillment and purpose really meant.

It wasn’t that he suddenly disliked television or media. In fact, he genuinely loved the work. But over time, he realized that some of the moments that stayed with him most deeply weren’t tied to career milestones at all — they came from helping others through youth groups, retreats, and faith experiences that had quietly shaped his life for years.

That realization set him on an entirely different path.

Discovering the Paulist Fathers

As Father Dave began exploring the priesthood, people introduced him to the Paulist Fathers — a Catholic order known for its emphasis on communication, media, and evangelization.

Interestingly, Father Dave explains that while his media background initially helped connect him to the Paulists, that ultimately wasn’t the reason he stayed. What drew him in was the sense of community, mission, and purpose he found within the order itself.

In fact, once he committed to the priesthood, he assumed his television and broadcasting career was likely behind him forever.

As it turned out, that was only the beginning.

When Everything Came Full Circle

One of the most fascinating parts of Father Dave’s story is the realization that the storytelling instincts, communication skills, and media experience he spent years developing never stopped mattering.

Eventually, those skills became central to his mission as a priest.

Today, Father Dave is the voice behind Busted Halo — one of the country’s most recognizable faith-based media platforms — and a daily presence on SiriusXM’s Catholic Channel, where he combines faith, conversation, humor, storytelling, and modern media in a way that reaches millions of listeners.

It’s a remarkable example of how experiences we believe belong to one chapter of life can unexpectedly become essential to another.

The Surprisingly Human Process of Becoming a Priest

Another highlight of the conversation is Father Dave’s candid look inside the process of becoming a priest.

He walks us through:

  • years of discernment
  • philosophy and theology training
  • mentorship
  • hospital rotations
  • internships
  • and the emotional challenge of determining whether a calling is truly right for you.

The discussion is thoughtful, honest, and surprisingly relatable — even for listeners who are not religious.

At its core, this episode isn’t simply about faith or religion. It’s about identity, fulfillment, reinvention, and the winding career journeys that shape who we become.
