Don La Greca: Sometimes the Road to Your Dream Takes You in the Opposite Direction
In 1989, Don La Greca attended a New Jersey Devils fan club dinner hoping to sit with one of his favorite players, Jim Korn. When Korn didn't show up, organizers offered him a seat at the broadcasters' table instead.
For a young man dreaming of a career in sports broadcasting, it was an extraordinary consolation prize.
Don found himself sitting alongside legendary announcer Gary Thorne and other members of the Devils broadcast team, asking questions about their careers and imagining what his own future might hold.
He kept a signed table card from that evening, complete with Thorne's encouragement to pursue broadcasting.
Decades later, Don would become the television voice of the New Jersey Devils.
It's the kind of full-circle story that almost seems too perfect. But what makes Don's journey especially interesting isn't simply that he achieved his dream. It's how many times he had to move in seemingly the opposite direction to get there.
When Your Passion and Your Career Collide
Anyone familiar with Don knows that he's a passionate sports fan. He grew up rooting for the Mets, Giants, and Devils, and those loyalties ran deep.
But as his broadcasting career developed, Don faced an uncomfortable reality: the opportunities available to him didn't necessarily involve the teams he loved.
In 2002, he was offered a position working on Jets pregame and postgame coverage. There was just one problem.
Don was a lifelong Giants fan.
Accepting the job meant spending Sundays working for a team he'd grown up rooting against, often missing the Giants games he'd followed religiously since childhood.
It was a genuine dilemma. But Don understood that building a career meant looking beyond his personal preferences.
As his longtime colleague Michael Kay would remind him, "You're rooting for you."
That simple observation became an important guiding principle.
Don went on to work Rangers broadcasts despite being a devoted Devils fan. He spent more than two decades alongside Kay, the television voice of the Yankees, even though Don's baseball allegiance belonged to the Mets.
On the surface, these assignments seemed at odds with everything he'd grown up loving.
Professionally, they were exactly where he needed to be.
The Moment Everything Became Clear
Perhaps the most revealing example came during the 2012 Eastern Conference Final between the Devils and Rangers.
Don was working the Rangers broadcast when Adam Henrique scored the overtime goal that sent New Jersey to the Stanley Cup Final.
For the young Devils fan who had once attended that team dinner, it should have been a moment of pure celebration.
Instead, Don felt something unexpected: disappointment.
The Rangers' elimination meant his broadcasting season was over. His childhood team was advancing, but his professional opportunity had come to an end.
It was the moment he fully recognized how his perspective had changed.
He hadn't stopped loving the Devils. He'd simply learned that building a successful career required a different set of priorities.
There's a lesson here that extends far beyond sports broadcasting.
We often imagine that pursuing our passions means following a straight line toward the things we love. But professional growth rarely works that way.
Sometimes the opportunity that makes the least emotional sense is the one that teaches us the most, introduces us to the right people, or prepares us for something we can't yet imagine.
Playing the Long Game
When Don eventually became the Devils' television play-by-play announcer, it wasn't simply a case of a lifelong fan landing his dream job.
It was the culmination of decades spent developing skills, building relationships, accepting unfamiliar assignments, and learning from experienced colleagues.
In fact, Don acknowledges that his years working Rangers broadcasts helped make the Devils opportunity possible.
Had he insisted on working only for teams he supported, his career might have unfolded very differently.
And that may be the most valuable insight from his journey.
The opportunities that ultimately lead us where we want to go don't always look like opportunities at the time.
Sometimes they look like compromises. Sometimes they require us to put aside our preferences. And sometimes they take us in directions we never expected.
For Don La Greca, those choices eventually brought him right back to where he wanted to be.
Today, that signed table card from 1989 still hangs in his home—a reminder of a young sports fan who couldn't have imagined the journey ahead.
In our conversation with Don on No Wrong Choices, we explore the many twists and turns behind that journey, from his early days in radio to his longtime partnership with Michael Kay, the stories behind his legendary on-air rants, and the relationships that helped shape his career.
It's a conversation about preparation, persistence, and recognizing that the road to your dream isn't always the one you expected to travel.
